School board limits 2013-14 tax increases

The Muncy School Board approved a resolution Monday night that limits any tax increases in the 2013-14 fiscal year to a maximum of 2.2 percent, in accordance with the state Taxpayer Relief Act passed in 2006.

The school board’s resolution, which passed by a vote of 9-0, serves as a guarantee the district will not ask taxpayers to approve a referendum this year that hikes taxes more than the rate of inflation.

The inflation rate has been has been set at 2.2 percent this year by the state Department of Education.

In other business, Junior/Senior High Principal Ken Welliver reported that the new, more secure front entrance is almost finished.

“The camera is installed,” Welliver said. “We’re just waiting for Berkshire (Alarm) to get here – they’ll install the system that allows the secretaries to unlock the door from their desk.”

Welliver also told the board that the auditorium is used for classes four out of the eight periods in the school day, and that he is looking for a firm to retrofit a number of seats so they can serve as desks.

The board also approved the reappointments of football head coach Jay Drumheller, field hockey head coach Rae Ellah Biddle, soccer head coaches Mark Wetherhold and Jim DeVore and girls tennis head coach Matt McCrone.

Board member Brian Krah asked if the practice of having sports coaches before the board could be reinstituted.

“I always found it a good time to ask questions that parents had asked of me,” Krah said.

“When we did that I’d have board members who would come complain to me about a coach, then the coach would come (to a meeting) and they wouldn’t say anything,” Welliver said.
