Former city police officer seeks sheriff post

Hugh “Ed” McGee, of Woodward Township, is seeking the Democratic nomination for county sheriff in May’s primary.

McGee ran for sheriff as a Democrat in 2009 and lost to current sheriff Mark Lusk.

“I’d like to demonstrate to the voters of Lycoming County what politics should be like,” McGee said. “I’m trying to break the pattern there seems to be of people getting elected and then making a career out of it … term limits is what I’m trying to impress on the voters.”

If elected, McGee said he will limit himself to one term in office.

“I’m concerned about the political imbalance in the county,” McGee said. “When there’s no representation from both sides, politicians have a tendency to become complacent.”

McGee was a city policeman from 1978 through 2003, when he retired and became self-employed. He said his experience in law enforcement inclined him to pursue election to the sheriff’s office.

“Everybody needs a chance at this stuff,” McGee said. “The office is far too important to have one person on the ballot … we should give somebody else a chance.”

Asked for his view on the current workings of the sheriff’s office, McGee said “the term oversell comes to mind. They might be overstepping the bounds of the office, things like that.”

McGee graduated from Williamsport Area High School, Harrisburg Area Community College, the Allentown Police Academy and served as a military policeman in the Army.

He is a member of the Travelers Protective Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a retired member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29.

He is married to the former Dee Ann James and has two daughters and a son.
