Township supervisors OK road work bid

Loyalsock Township supervisors approved contacts for road materials at their meeting Tuesday night.

“The good news is we beat the 2012 price on every item,” township Manager Bill Burdett said.

The supervisors awarded a $708,328 contract to Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. for resurfacing projects in 2013.

“We have another aggressive paving project coming up this year,” Burdett said. “Last year we spent $749,000, and the quantities are different, but the unit price is less.”

The supervisors also awarded a $111,995 contract to Hammaker’s for chipseal materials and $117,382 to Interstate Road for line painting.

The board amended a resolution made at its last meeting to contribute to a school resource officer position in Loyalsock Township schools supplied by the state police.

Instead of paying for the position through the next half-year, the township will fund its portion of the resource officer position through the 2013-14 school year.

“We’ll evaluate this after a year to see if we want to continue funding it,” Burdett said. “It was about $32,000 to fund it this last year.”

At their next meeting, on March 12, supervisors will vote on a resolution to turn over the township’s sewer system to the Williamsport Sanitary Authority.

The resolution will not fully commit the township to combining its sewer system with the city authority, but it will state they have “every intention to move ahead with it,” solicitor Charles Greevy said.
