POTTSVILLE-One second from celebrating a huge win, Loyalsock instead experienced crushing heartbreak.
Dominick Antonelli hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that forced overtime and Trinity took control there, edging Loyalsock, 73-68 in Saturday’s Class AA state quarterfinal at Martz Hall. The Lancers finished 26-4 and won the third-most games in their storied program’s history.
Loyalsock was playing in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1995 and led the entire fourth quarter until Antonelli’s shot.
The Lancers were up 60-55 with 1:55 remaining but the Harrisburg-area Trinity fought back and earned a state semifinal berth Wednesday against Holy Cross.
Four sophomore starters return for Loyalsock next season and a team that broke down some walls this season is hoping 2013 was just the start.
“It’s really good because we get to feel the atmosphere for going far,” Loyalsock forward Ben Sosa said. “Hopefully next year we can go farther than this.”
