Man who died in Forks Township fire identified

FORKSVILLE – The man who perished last week in a blaze that destroyed his home on Norton Road in Forks Township has been identified as Dr. Michael Anthony Miles, a former emergency medicine physician.

Sullivan County Coroner Wendy Hastings said “autopsy results and dental records” helped investigators identify Miles’ body, which was found inside the fire-ravaged property on the afternoon of Feb. 25.

The blaze was reported about 10:30 a.m. and was “completely engulfed in flames” when volunteer freighters arrived on the scene, Hastings said.

Part of the home already had collapsed, Hastings added.

Miles, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was found near the front of the house, Hastings said.

A state police fire marshal investigated the fire, but no cause was determined.

A native of Reading who received his medical training at Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, Miles was an emergency room physician for many years in Reading and Ephrata. He retired five years ago as medical director at Carpenter Technology Corp. in Reading.
