Muncy dental clinic gets into giving spirit

MUNCY – If it feels good, do it. And for several dozen people in need of dental work, that’s a good thing.

Apple Dental once again opened its doors to people in need of teeth extractions, fillings, and cleanings. And the best part about it – it was free.

Dr. Lawrence Leggieri said many of the people who showed up at his practice at 929 Lycoming Mall Drive Friday were happy for the dental work.

“For the most part people are really gracious and express a lot of gratitude,” he said.

He estimated about 20 people looking to take advantage of the free service were waiting for him to open his doors in the morning. All told, about 40 people had undergone some type of dental work as of early Friday afternoon. Leggieri said it feels good to give something back to people. To prepare for the patients, Leggieri received help from some 20 volunteers who gave their time to perform paper work and other administrative duties.

Dr. Jack Malloy, a Lewisburg oral surgeon, also was on hand to perform extractions.

“About a third of the people here (today) don’t work here,” he said.

Leggieri said he’s offered the free service for about 20 years. He’s had as many as 100 people show up for the service, which he offers every spring. He’s not sure why numbers have been down the past two years.

“I know the need is out there,” he added.

He acknowledged that many people are unable to afford dental work, including those who are without insurance. But his doors were open to everyone – both the insured and uninsured.

Leggieri said he’ll continue to offer the service.

“No doubt about it,” he said.

Sarah Swisher, a personal assistant, said for the most part patients came for extractions and fillings.

“It went pretty well,” she said.

Patterson Dental, of Scranton, contributed supplies for the service. In addition, Walmart, Giant, Weis and Wegmans supermarkets donated gift cards for supplies.

“Everybody ought to be involved in charity,” Leggieri said. “So many more people would be helped if everyone gave their time.”

He said whenever he gives, he always somehow gets something in return.
