County eliminates 6 part-time coroner jobs
Lycoming County commissioners approved the elimination of six part-time deputy coroner positions Thursday, while hiring a new full-time coroner and promoting an existing one.
The move is designed to streamline the coroner’s office and make it more effective, according to county officials, who said it was often difficult to find an available part-time deputy coroner to handle a call for service.
“I just think it’s going to make it more functional,” said chief county Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
He said that his office has been getting busier and busier.
“We can’t function if one of the two of us goes out of service, Kiessling said about he and his chief deputy Coroner Jerold N. Ross Sr. “This gives us a better system of coverage.”
Ross said that two-thirds of calls for service to the coroner’s office come after 5 p.m. and before 8 a.m. and on holidays and weekends.
Commissioners approved Ross’s new position along with the hiring of Julianna E. Currinder as a new full-time deputy coroner.
Ross will be paid $42,000 annually, while Currinder will receive $35,000 annually.
Kiessling said that Currinder brings new areas of background in forensic anthropology and criminal justice to the county coroner’s office that will be useful.
“This allows us to use her knowledge to better our system,” added Ross.
In other action, commissioners also approved an agreement with Girio Agency Inc., of 521 N. Market St., to provide up to 35 residential appraisals for flood buyout properties. The cost was set not to exceed $13,500.
Commissioners also approved a $914 payment for extradition services to Prisoner Transportation Services of America, of Nashville, Tenn., for a felon apprehended in Palatka, Fla. Luann Yohn, county Chief Adult Probation Officer, said the costs would be added to the person’s court costs.
Commissioners also approved the following personnel changes:
Promotion of Carla S. Miller to full-time replacement EMS regional field coordinator at an annual rate of $43,518;
Promotion of Christopher Dalla Piazza to full-time replacement programmer analyst at an annual rate of $47,260;
Hiring of Christina A. Lepley as a part-time replacement Pre-Release Center driver at an hourly rate of $12.39, up to 1,000 annually.
