Dedication nears for Picture Rocks veterans park

PICTURE ROCKS – A long-awaited memorial park will be dedicated in the borough at 10 a.m. May 11.

The Veterans Memorial Park of Picture Rocks, 179 S. Main St., now has as its centerpiece a 6-ton waterfall memorial, surrounded by bricks dedicated to veterans near and far.

The ceremony will feature a hoisting of the colors by the Williamsport Detachment of the Marine Corps League, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by the Montoursville Area High School chorus. Former Montoursville Area High School Principal Raymond Huff will give a keynote address.

American Legion Post 35, of Hughesville, will present a rifle salute and taps. Hughesville High School students Patrick Maggs and Jared Sones, who designed the waterfall memorial, will be recognized for their work.

About 300 bricks have been inscribed to veterans so far and placed in the park’s front entrance walkway, given by donors who have gifted the park $100 or more, said Picture Rocks Council President Gene Otterbein, who chairs the eight-person board that has worked for about five years on the memorial.

“We haven’t restricted bricks in the walkways to people from Picture Rocks or even Lycoming County. We have veterans from other states and so on,” said Robert Forse, a committee member. “We have a great number of individuals and businesses to thank for their financial support.”

About $2,000 was raised during March’s “Raise the Region” campaign for maintaining the park. The $36,000 cost for the waterfall memorial already has been paid, and now the water tank for the fountain is laid in the ground and ready to work.

“It’s all just about ready for the dedication,” Otterbein said. “We need to lay some more mulch in the gardens and that’s about it.”

Parking will be available in the Lewis Lumber Products lot, 30 S. Main St., across Muncy Creek from the park.
