Graduation season begins Sunday with Lycoming College

Lycoming College will be the first of the area’s colleges to hold its commencement ceremony, as it is set to graduate 265 undergraduate students on the campus’ quad at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Dr. James E. Douthat, who is retiring as college president after 24 years, will deliver the commencement address.

While at Lycoming, Douthat helped increase the college’s endowment from less than $19 million in 1989 to more than $180 million.

Montoursville native Michael Kane, an economics major, will provide greetings from the senior class during the ceremony.

Three honorary degrees also will be granted by the college Sunday – Deirdre P. Connelly, 1983 graduate and president of North American Pharmaceuticals of GlaxoSmithKline, a doctor of science degree; Dallas L. Krapf, class of 1969 and co-owner of Krapf Bus Companies, a doctor of laws degree; and Douthat, a doctor of humane letters degree.

The Rev. Beth Jones, a 1995 graduate, will be the speaker at the baccalaureate service in the recreation center 4 p.m. Saturday.

Commencement will be held in the recreation center in the event of inclement weather.

As Lycoming College is set to hold its commencement ceremony Sunday, other area colleges also will prepare to hold ceremonies in the coming weeks.

Pennsylvania College of Technology is the next to hold commencement as it will host three separate ceremonies at the Community Arts Center, 220 W. Fourth St., starting May 17.

Penn College’s schools of business and computer technologies, hospitality and transportation technology will hold a ceremony 3 p.m. May 17. Two ceremonies May 18 will include schools of industrial and engineering technologies, integrated studies and natural resources management at 10 a.m. And schools of construction and design technologies and health sciences at 1:30 p.m.

Lock Haven University will host its graduate programs commencement ceremony at Thomas Field House at 7:30 p.m. May 17 and its undergraduate commencement at Hubert Jack Stadium 10 a.m. May 18.

Mansfield University students will graduate at Decker Gymnasium at 11 a.m. May 18.

Bucknell University will conclude the area’s college graduations on the Academica Quadrangle at 10 a.m. May 19.
