No inmates left county in April

No inmates had to be exported out of Lycoming County during the month of April.

“We did get fairly close with the males – we had one weekend that was pretty tight, but we managed to get through it,” Warden Kevin DeParlos said at the prison board meeting Friday morning.

“We moved some out last Friday to make space for the Most Wanted list, and we had 13 in the jail from that over the weekend.”

DeParlos and Sheriff Mark Lusk met with President Judge Nancy Butts to review the current sentencing calendar, the warden said, after the concern was aired at April’s meeting that the schedule makes for too many peaks and valleys in inmate population.

“There’s not much to say other than there’s nothing more we can do about it,” Butts said. “We’ve cut it down as much as I can, but if we spread it out too much, it affects the rest of the system.”

Unscheduled sentencings at times in the process, notably arraignments, do make for some relief on the sentencing calendar, Butts said.

In other business, the board unanimously approved the hiring of four correctional officers. The hiring of a supervised bail officer also was approved, with a representative from the controller’s office casting a dissenting vote.
