City parking authority to charge less

Here’s something people don’t often hear – a city authority charging less money to its customers.

The Williamsport Parking Authority voted Wednesday to decrease its hourly rates by half in its garages from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, Saturday and Sunday and during nationally recognized holidays.

“Instead of $2 for the first hour, the charge will be $1,” said Dr. Anthony Cipolla, chairman of the authority.

Cipolla said while the reduction may be welcomed, the authority must continue to assess some fees because of costs incurred to provide security and maintain the garages.

In other business, the authority announced it is moving its business offices from the Midtown parking deck to 321 Pine St.

The office on Pine Street will be open Monday for those seeking tokens and paying parking tickets.

The office relocation was necessary because the planned demolition of the garage at West Third and Laurel streets is scheduled for later this summer, said William E. Nichols Jr., city finance director. After it is razed, it is expected to be replaced by a facility called Trade and Transit II. That building will house the new authority offices after a two-year lease expires.

Also among the discussion was stepped-up enforcement of parking at properties along Via Bella and William Street. Owners of properties at Wegmans, Susquehanna Bank and Blue Shield have been working with the authority to increase enforcement of parking.
