Event offering free fun for kids
The Williamsport Business Association is set to host Fun in the Sun Day, a free day of shows and activities for kids around the area, at Brandon Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10.
“It’s a free activity for kids at Brandon Park,” said Sherry Bender, event chairwoman. ” We’re going to have shows at the band shell. We have a ventriloquist that is going to do a show. We have a magician.”
Bender is co-chairing the event with Molly Bender and Jillian Ibbs.
Bender said some activities will be pony rides, environmental education and origami demonstrations. Activities will be hands-on to allow students to stay active, she said. The city’s fire and police departments also will be on hand to help youth explore safety services.
Everything at the event will be free, except for food.
The idea to host a day in the park came after a meeting in which the business association was looking for a way to use the outdoor spaces the area has. Bender suggested the fun day and plans have been rolling ever since.
“It’s just a way to get the kids outside and enjoy the park, instead of sitting inside playing on the computer or watching TV,” Bender said.
An obstacle course also will be hosted by MommiesRFit, which will get the youth moving around. And although parents may not want pony rides, Bender said, parents should have a good time there with their children.
“It’s our way of supporting the community. And in this day and age, parents like free things,” Bender said. “It’s our way of doing something to get the kids active. The parents are stress-free because they can have a good time for free.”
Sponsors for the event are Susquehanna Health, Discovery Machine, All State Insurance, Williamsport Sun-Gazette and Hudock Moyer Wealth Resources.
