Midtown parking garage demolition contract set for vote

The city Finance Committee Tuesday recommended approving a contract for $362,000 submitted in a low-bid by a Niagara Falls, N.Y., demolition and abatement company seeking to tear down the Midtown parking garage in September.

Apollo Dismantling Services contract was $300,000 less than what the city had anticipated and that made committee members pleased, according to Councilwoman Liz Miele, a member of the committee.

Cost of the initial phase, two-thirds of which will consist of demolition and site construction, is expected to be less than $1 million.

The committee also recommended approval for River Valley Transit to purchase three compressed natural gas buses.

The company received a clean energy grant to buy four buses and bought one this summer, said William E. Nichols, city finance director and general manager of River Valley Transit. “We can buy three more.”

Nichols said he also has applied with the U.S. Highway Transit Administration for a grant to pay for additional buses. “We’re asking for eight but will be happy with what we can get,” he said.
