Enrollment up for Montoursville schools

Enrollment figures for the Montoursville Area School District are up slightly from last year, according to figures released during Tuesday night’s regular monthly school board meeting.

The total number of students was 1,991, up six students from the same time last year.

Eighth grade has the highest number of pupils at 174.

Overall, that’s 32 more eighth-graders than last year, the highest increase of any grade level.

By contrast, the district’s seventh-grade class dropped from 177 students at the start of the 2012-13 school year to 134 this year.

This year’s senior class stands at 154 students.

Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers noted that enrollment figures have for the most part remained consistent.

“There are certain pocket of spikes,” he said.

A total of 141 students are enrolled in kindergarten this year, a drop of five from last year.

“Some kindergarten classes are higher than we’d like to see,” Bowers said.

The board took action on a number of personnel matters.

The retirement of speech pathologist Eve Hilsher was approved.

The board also accepted the resignation of Lyter Elementary secretary Mary Mahosky.

Her resignation is effective Monday.
