County receives grant for rail line

Lycoming County will receive $370,113 from the State Transportation Commission to rehabilitate more than 2,000 feet of rail line at NuWeld Co. in Reach Road Industrial Park.

County officials said they worked closely with SEDA-Council of Governments’ Joint Rail Authority and the office of state Sen. E. Eugene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, to secure the dollars.

“Sen. Yaw shouldered this infrastructure request every step of the way,” said Lycoming County Commissioner Jeff Wheeland. “He was steadfast in his determination to help us bring rail infrastructure funding to our development community.”

William Kelly, deputy director of county planning and community development, said it’s always cause for celebration when funding for infrastructure can be secured.

“It took over a year to get it,” added Lycoming County Commissioner Anthony Mussare.

County officials indicated they will work through SEDA-COG’s Joint Rail Authority to bring the project to reality and increase rail capacity for serving not only NuWeld but the region.
