School board approves lease for 1,150 iPads
The East Lycoming school board approved the lease of 1,150 iPad Mini devices Tuesday.
The four-year lease with Winthrop Resources Corp., at a cost of $6,498 per month, will allow the devices to be used by students for a district-wide iPad initiative that will launch in the 2014 school year.
The board also heard from Stephen Flaherty, RBC Capital Markets director, about refinancing options for the district. Bond ratings, he said, “are at an all-time low,” and by refinancing to one of these lower rates, the district could save money.
The district’s credit rating of AA-, which Flaherty called “excellent” for a district of its size, could help them lock in a low finance rate for the next several years.
The board agreed to move forward with the plan; Flaherty will return for the Jan. 14 meeting for further planning.
The board also accepted the resignation retirements of William Carroll, Pamela Lamb and Michael Jan Mostowy.
They also accepted the resignations of head football coach Andrew Brown, effective Dec. 9; head boys varsity and junior high soccer coach Jeremy Edkin, effective Dec. 17; assistant boys soccer coach Mindy Hyde, effective Nov. 25; supervisory aide and security worker LeAnn DeSciscio, effective Dec. 23; and head football and competitive spirit cheerleading coach Theresa Knott.
The board approved the hiring of Rosa Shaner as a part-time supervisory aide at Renn Elementary and Rebecca Minier as a part-time supervisory aide at the high school, effective Dec. 18, both at a rate of $9.09 per hour. They also approved the transfer of Crystal Faulk from part-time supervisory aide to part-time high school secretary at a rate of $11.34 per hour.
Other approvals of personnel included the hiring of Troy Charles as head junior high wrestling coach at the cost of $4,585; Adam Gehr as junior high boys basketball coach at the cost of $1,417; and Ethan Showers as a fitness center worker at a rate of $8.00 per hour.
The coaching reappointments of Tom Brokaw as 7th grade boys basketball head coach and Dave Adams as 9th grade boys basketball coach were also approved by the board. Brokaw will be paid $2,954 and Adams will be paid $3,390.
The board also approved a two-year contract with the East Lycoming Education Support Professional Association. The contract takes effect July 1, 2014, and extends through June of 2016 and provides an increase of $0.39 per hour in the first year and $0.37 per hour in the second year.
The next board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14 at Hughesville High School.
