Charges filed in fatal crash
City police Officer Jonathan Deprenda will be arraigned this morning on charges of homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter, Lycoming County District Attorney Eric R. Linhardt announced late Monday.
The charges were filed after a state police investigation into the Jan. 12 fatal crash at East Third and Railway streets that resulted in the death of James David Robinson, 42, whose car was struck from behind while Deprenda was en route to assist another officer, according to officials.
Deprenda’s arraignment will be at 9 a.m. before District Judge Allen P. Page III at the Lycoming County Courthouse.
Following the arraignment, Linhardt and the state police will hold a joint news conference at 11 a.m. at the Executive Plaza building, where they intend to take questions.
The affidavit and complaint against Deprenda, 32, will not be made available before the news conference, according to Linhardt.
Deprenda was traveling at 88 mph in a 35-mph zone when the collision occurred about 6:48 p.m. Jan. 12, according to state police.
Deprenda’s vehicle passed two other vehicles, but hit Robinson’s as it was turning left, state police said.
Robinson’s car struck a utility pole and hit a house before bursting into flames.
State police accident reconstructionists spent several days collecting evidence at the crash site before providing a preliminary report to Linhardt, who asked for additional information before issuing the charges.
