Airport approach tower project underway

The Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority agreed this week to start the first phase of a $6.5 to $7 million project to improve the Williamsport Regional Airport’s runway approaches.

The authority approved a $370,000 agreement for L. Robert Kimball & Associates, headquartered in Ebensburg, to design new runway approach towers. About $400,000 in funding has been secured for this phase, authority Executive Director Tom Hart said.

Design should be completed by mid-summer, and the authority will start the bidding and construction phase, he said.

The overall project will take almost four years to do, start to finish, Hart said.

“Eventually, there will be all new approach towers, new runway lighting, milling and overlay of the runway, and obstruction removal east of the airport,” Hart said. “We’ve been working on this for a couple years, and all the funding is coming into place.”

Also, the authority authorized advertising for bids to install new electric and communication lines east of the airport on Streibeigh Lane. Bids will open March 13.

The property owner wants to demolish a building with two approach towers, so the authority is re-routing the electric for the towers, Hart said.

Those towers will be demolished and new ones put up as part of the larger project.
