Frigid temperatures hammer area; front takes snow south
It likely won’t snow today, but that doesn’t mean the local area won’t remain in the icy grip of winter that’s been the rule for most of the past few months.
Much of the snow that fell on the state Sunday went south of Lycoming County.
So for now, it will be cold temperatures and snow remaining on the ground from past storms to remind everyone it’s still winter.
The National Weather Service in State College is calling for a cold and cloudy day today, but no snow.
The high temperature is expected to reach 21 degrees, but blustery conditions will bring a wind chill of as low as minus 4.
Overnight lows will dip to just below zero.
“An Arctic air mass building behind a frontal boundary is responsible for the cold,” said weather service forecaster Kevin Fitzgerald. “It will be below normal (temperatures) through the week.”
It will remain cold Tuesday, but without the accompanying winds. On the partly sunny day, the thermometer will reach 26 degrees and dip to 7 overnight.
Wednesday and Thursday will be partly sunny.
The high will be 26 Wednesday and 30 Thursday. Wednesday night’s low will fall to minus 3.
Fitzgerald warned of the possibility of either rain or snow Thursday night as the result of a storm off the east coast. The chance of any precipitation, he said, is about 30 percent.
By the end of the week, a warming trend will arrive, with temperatures finally rising above freezing.
The forecast for both Friday and Saturday is partly sunny. Highs will reach 38 Friday and 42 Saturday.
The normal high temperature for March 3 in Williamsport is 43 and the normal low 24.
But March does mean gradually warming temperatures.
By March 31, normal high and low temperatures are 54 and 34.
The average temperature in Williamsport for February was 6.5 degrees below normal for that month, according to Fitzgerald.
A total of 21.6 inches of snow fell on the city during the month, the fourth highest amount on record for February.
The record high snowfall for February was 34.3 inches, set in 1972.
