Bicycle and River Fest scheduled May 10 at South Side sports park
Dust off the bicycles, grab some friends and head over to the Susquehanna Greenway Bicycle and River Fest from 1 to 5 p.m. May 10 at the South Williamsport Sports Park. The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership has teamed with The Bicycle Center to host the event and to promote active, healthy lifestyle choices.
There will be fun and healthy activities for all ages, including a bicycle scavenger hunt. Registered participants, ages 13 and up, will bike the Susquehanna River Walk to collect clues and learn about river history, culture and nature.
Registered children ages 6 to 12 can participate in the Kids’ Bike Derby, where they will learn new bicycling skills. A variety of bike courses will be set up for children to test their skills.
Those who register before April 19 will receive a discounted price. Registration includes an event T-shirt, healthy meal provided by Hillside Catering, water bottle and a chance to win a bike and helmet from The Bicycle Center.
The Genetti Hotel and the Williamsport Rotary Club Bicycle Share program will share bikes with participants who do not have a bicycle, with the exchange of a valid photo identification card. The bike shares will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Several food vendors – such as Hillside Catering, Fresh Life, and Sinner or Saint food van – will be at the River Fest to offer a wide variety of healthy foods.
Educational outreach booths and vendors also will be set up throughout the River Fest. Children and adults may visit each booth and learn about bike safety and healthy living. Some booths will have shoe measurements, helmet fittings, bicycle seat adjustments, health screenings from Susquehanna Health and specialized bike demonstrations.
Some booths will raffle off prizes such as a catered dinner from Hillside Catering, a three-month membership to the Williamsport YMCA and a garage door opener from Overhead Door Co. of Lycoming County.
The Pepper Street Band will play live music at the event.
