Forum on drug’s economic toll in May

The discussion of heroin abuse in the Williamsport area again will be explored, this time from a business perspective, when the Pennsylvania Economy League holds a forum on the topic May 2.

The non-partisan, non-profit group aims to “outline the challenges and solutions” of the drug’s toll on the community, focusing on its economic impact, Communications Director Lynne Shedlock said.

“What is the toll if you have employees that can’t pass a drug test or have excessive absenteeism?” Shedlock said. “We’re exploring issues related to the epidemic of drug abuse in the region.”

The group holds forums such as these twice a year, when regional committees identify issues that impact businesses and community, to “educate and enlighten people on the issue,” Shedlock said.

The forums also serve as catalysts for ideas, specifically for reforms to public policies, she said.
