Monroeton man charged in death of woman in car crash

TOWANDA – Richard Leighton, 69, of Monroeton, was charged in district court Thursday with homicide by motor vehicle while driving under the influence of intoxicants in connection with the death of a Dushore woman last month.

According to state police, Leighton was driving on Route 220 in Monroe Township with a blood alcohol content of .16, twice the legal limit, when he crossed into the southbound land and crashed head on into 64 year-old Rosemary K. Manuel’s vehicle March 13.

Manuel died from her injuries after she was air lifted to Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.

Leighton also was charged with DUI, and a number of traffic charges.

A preliminary hearing has not yet been set.
