Field set for races in the fall

Primary elections are over, and races for state and federal offices alike have been set.

According to unofficial results, in the 83rd Legislative District, Lycoming County Commissioner Jeff Wheeland won the Republican nomination. He will face Democrat incumbent Rick Mirabito in the fall election.

“My focus now is on meeting people and making sure I understand what their concerns are as they relate to Harrisburg,” Wheeland said.

Kristen Marie Hayes, of Jersey Shore, won the Democratic nomination for the 84th Legislative District with and will face Republican incumbent Garth Everett in November.

“I look forward to meeting more people in the district,” she said. “My goal is to win the election and return the 84th District House seat to the people to whom it rightfully belongs.”

In the 5th Congressional District, which encompasses Tioga County, Kerith Strano-Taylor won the Democratic nomination, defeating fellow Democrat

Thomas Tarantella. Strano-Taylor will face Republican Glenn “GT” Thompson, incumbent, in the fall.

“I’m overwhelmed by the support we found in the 5th District, and I feel we are one step closer to rebuilding the American middle class,” she said.

Facing no opposition for the Democratic nomination in the 10th Congressional District, Scott Brion, of Liberty, won the nomination and will face Republican incumbent Tom Marino in November.

In the 68th Legislative District, Jonathan Ruth won the Democratic nomination and will face Republican incumbent Matt Baker in November.

Ruth, a school teacher who is new to politics, said he is “excited about the turnout in the primary and I am excited to move ahead with the campaign and get our message out of representing parents, families and teachers to solve our state education problems in Harrisburg.”

There was no Republican candidate on the ballot in the 76th Legislative District, where Michael Hanna Sr., incumbent, won the Democratic nomination.

Nick Troiano, of Milford, is collecting signatures to appear on the general election ballot in November as an independent for the 10th Congressional District. The deadline to submit petitions for Congressional office is Aug. 1.
