City’s summer recreation programs expanded
The city is expanding summer parks programs to Lose, Young’s Woods and Newberry parks starting Monday.
Mayor Gabriel J. Campana said the programs will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. and staffed by two employees at each of the parks. A summer recreation program also is available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shaw Place Park, according to Justin Simpson, city recreation director.
The schedule for the expanded parks’ program is Monday through Friday at Newberry Park, and Wednesday through Sunday at Lose and Young’s Woods parks, Simpson said.
Campana said he picked the three parks for expansion because he wanted to provide recreation opportunities for the children in the neighborhoods across the city.
The mayor also said the city intends to partner with the Community Alliance for Progressive Positive Action to provide additional summer academic-recreation components.
“Without city involvement, and a financial contribution, the organization would not be able to have its summer educational/recreational program this summer,” he said.
Campana said Tuesday he also wants to form a diversity committee to discuss race relations.
