Board OKs $1 million to upgrade technology

BLOSSBURG – The Southern Tioga School Board met Monday evening to approve $1,057,965 to be used for the district wide technology upgrade. $388,453 will be awarded to Intermediate Unit No. 17 to upgrade the district-wide technology infrastructure. $647,000 will be awarded to LAM Systems Inc for the purchase of 1,000 Lenovo 11e Yoga Touch with a three-year warranty. Broderick Hughes, LLC will be awarded $22,512 for air conditioning for the North Penn-Liberty High School server room, and for the North Penn-Mansfield High School server room with installation. Costs for the upgrade will be funded through the general obligation bond 2010A.

The board voted 7-0 to seek additional legal council regarding a new policy to allow students and staff to bring in personal electronics into school for educational purposes.

A $300 grant was accepted from the Potter/Tioga Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. The grant money will be used to support the technology education at North Penn-Mansfield High School.

A contract was accepted with the IU No. 17 for the Virtually Linking Instruction and Curriculum program for the 2014-15 school year. The program is an online cyber education program offered through the school district.

The board renewed an agreement with American Insurance Company (ACE) to provide voluntary student accident coverage. The coverage is available for student whose parents wish to purchase insurance for their child, but do not carry health insurance for themselves. The coverage at a school rate will cost $27, or parents can purchase 24-hour coverage for $98. The coverage will be effective from Aug. 26, 2014 until Aug. 26, 2015. This agreement is the same as the agreement that was passed during the 2013-14 school year.

A building use request for the student council to host a welcome back dance in the North Penn-Mansfield High school cafeteria also was approved by the board.

The board also accepted the resignations of Shareen Roupp, business office specialist, effective July 18; Gina Dake, Blossburg Elementary cafeteria worker, effective June 16; Kelly Black, Liberty Elementary cafeteria substitute, effective June 16; Whitnie Weaver, English teacher at North Penn-Liberty High School, effective Aug. 22.
