County awarded grant to assess properties
To begin the process of stimulating investment and redevelopment in the area, the county Department of Planning and Community Development will hold a public meeting next month regarding a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, the county department recently announced.
The county was awarded a $550,000 Brownfields Assessment Coalition grant from the federal agency in 2012 so the county can conduct environmental site assessments at any county property where the future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination.
With the grant, the county will seek potential sites to include in its inventory and provide funding and assistance for environmental assessment and remediation.
Citizens and property owners are invited to attend the Aug. 6 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Wheeland Community Center, 1201 Locust St., Jersey Shore, to learn more about the Lycoming County Brownfields Coalition and how it intends to use the funds. The coalition includes the county, the city and Muncy Borough.
This is the second time the county has received the grant from the federal government. In 2005, the county was awarded $200,000 which helped identify 80 sites and assess 15.
