Fundraiser at gallery supports citizen group

A city art gallery will host a fundraiser next Friday for Williamsport Proud, a grassroots citizens’ group seeking a more unified community.

Converge Gallery, 140 W. Fourth St., will hold the event from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 15.

“Our mission is to promote unity within our diverse community by solicitation of support and involvement in affairs and concerns affecting our multicultural community,” said Derek Slaughter, Williamsport Proud founder.

Williamsport Proud organized a march down West Fourth Street to Memorial Park June 7. It was a protest of Mayor Gabriel J. Campana’s decision, because of ongoing issues of drug gang recruitment and litter, to remove basketball hoops from the park, Slaughter said.

A voter registration table will be at the gallery.

Visitors will have a chance to take home a piece of artwork as 30 basketballs that make up “Gentrification,” an installation by artist Tim Miller, of Lewisburg, will be sold for $40 each. Money raised will go toward repaying Pete White, who donated the balls to the artist.

Any remaining proceeds from sale of the basketballs will go to Williamsport Proud organization.
