School board welcomes assistant superintendent
The Williamsport Area School Board was updated on the construction progress of the High School and Middle School at its monthly meeting Tuesday evening and also introduced to Peter D. Chapla, the new assistant superintendent.
Superintendent Don Adams handled the intoduction and the board welcomed Chapla, whose previous experience includes stints as principal at Western Wayne Middle School in Lake Ariel and Valley View High School in Archabald.
Jeff Angstadt, construction project manager, updated the board on the progress of the construction and went through a laundry list of ongoing and finished projects.
In his opinion, the only area of concern is the completion of the high school gymnasium.
“The gym is going to come down to the wire,” he said. “It’s on track to be done right at the start of the school year.”
The project manager reassured board members that the crews are working quickly and efficiently and said he would keep them abreast of further advancements.
Board member Jane Penman expressed concern for the high school teachers who want to get into their classrooms and prepare for their curriculum for the school year.
“I understand the safety concern,” she said, “but can’t you just give them hard hats or something?”
Angstadt reported that most of the classrooms were not under construction, especially those on the second floor.
The Teachers are able to get into those rooms, he said, and some already do so.
After the board was updated on these projects, they approved of all items on the agenda unanimously, with one exception.
Diane Turner abstained for the vote to accept the resignation of Melissa A. Turner due to her relation by marriage to the cross country assistant coach.
