Jury selected for man’s trial in death of toddler

The jury was selected Tuesday in Lycoming County Court for the involuntary manslaughter trial for Brandon Scott Hoffman in the death of his girlfriend’s small son last May.

Hoffman, 21, of 409 S. Main St., also is facing aggravated assault and other charges in connection with the child’s death.

Hoffman, who lived with Sierra Shoemaker, is accused of causing Shoemaker’s 18-month-old son’s death while Hoffman was babysitting the toddler in an apartment.

During the preliminary hearing last June, Shoemaker testified she left her son in Hoffman’s care while she went to work on May 5, 2015.

While Shoemaker was at work, Hoffman called to tell her he was at the Jersey Shore Hospital with her son, she said.

Hoffman had a good relationship with her son, and she had believed the child to be safe with him, according to Shoemaker.

Because of the extent of his injuries, the toddler was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, but he died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma.

The manner of death was homicide, according to the pathologist.

Hoffman is charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with the victim less than 6 years old and defendant 18 years or older, aggravated assault with the victim less than 13 years old and defendant 18 years or older, endangering welfare of children, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

The trial is scheduled for June in front of county Judge Marc F. Lovecchio.
