City leaf collection starts Monday, continues through to December

The city will begin its leaf collection Monday, according to Tom Cillo, general manager of the Streets and Parks Department.

Collection will continue into December, weather permitting, he said. Residents should place leaves along the curbline of the main streets as no alley pickup is possible due to the equipment size, he said.

All neighborhoods will be picked up on an ongoing basis during these weeks, he said. Once a street has been cleared, it will be at least one week until crews return to the area, he said.

Collection is for leaves, with no brush and yard waste, according to city ordinance. Brush can jam or damage the equipment, especially when it is hidden beneath a pile of leaves, and that can slow operations, Cillo said.

Leaf collection is for loose leaves, not for those in plastic bags or boxes. None of these containers or bags will be picked up, he said.

Also, the city mulch pile is open at the public services building at 1550 W. Third St. The hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Grass clippings are not accepted at this time, Cillos said. A spring yard waste collection will be scheduled in conjunction with Earth Day in April.
