Loyalsock Township flood damage assessed
The Loyalsock Township supervisors were updated Tuesday night on damage the township faced from Friday’s sudden deluge.
Township crews responded early Friday around 2:30 and 3 a.m., Bill Burdett, township manager, said.
“The main thing that needed to be done that day were dealing with the road closures and assisting the fire company,” he said.
About 16 township roads were partially or completely closed in the aftermath of the storm.
An area of the township that was most affected was Miller Run Road.
“The road is adjacent to the park, the pool and the community center,” Burdett said. “We do know that the facilities received damage. We are worried that a lot of debris washed into the pool and the liner could be damaged.”
A township crew will begin cleaning up the mess in the pool today, he said.
Burdett estimated the overall damage cost to the township was around $250,000.
It’s not likely that the township will receive relief money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency because the flooding was a localized event, Burdett said.
There is a chance that funds will come from the state Emergency Management Agency, but there’s been no official indication yet, Burdett said.
The township was largely spared, but the assessment of the overall damage will be ongoing as things develop, Burdett explained.
In nother matter, the supervisors unanimously approved the demolition and rebuilding of the Sheetz at 330 Westminster Drive, conditional on the engineer’s approval.
Voting were Richard H. Wheeland, John C. Bower Jr., Marc C. Sortman, Virginia M. Eaton and Paul D. Nyman.
The project will cause the Sheetz to be out of service for six months beginning tentatively on Jan. 10.
It will reopen in early July.
