PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette State police investigate the scene of fatal crash that occurred Tuesday morning on Route 973 in Old Lycoming Township. A 17-year-old female driver died after her car collided with a pickup truck.

A teenage girl died Tuesday morning from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle collision along Route 973.

Old Lycoming Township police reported the crash occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. when a pickup truck driven by Stephen Watts, of Jersey Shore, collided with a car operated by a 17-year-old female.

Police said a sedan, driven by the teenage victim, for an unknown reason crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and struck Watts’ truck traveling west.

The teenager, a student at Williamsport Area High School, died instantly, police said.

She has not been identified by police.

Both drivers reportedly were wearing seat belts.

The road was closed for a short time before reopening.

Williamsport Area School District Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students today. We extend our condolences to the family during this extremely difficult time.”

A team of grief counselors will be available on-site for students, faculty and staff today and will remain as needed.

Extra support also has been arranged for the high school to provide any additional assistance the school may need.
