Bids too high for nature trail

In non-budget related action Monday night, Montoursville Borough Council rejected all seven bids from firms for the Indian Park nature trail.

It was noted that the bids came in too high.

Council heard a proposal for opening up borough property for a community garden.

Maddie McDonald, an 11th-grade Montoursville student, said the garden is part of a school project to help bring about community interaction.

Several parcels owned by the borough have been considered for the garden, she said.

Scott Metzger, of Montoursville Little League, approached council about reconsidering a decision to no longer have in place a temporary stop sign in the street near the baseball field during games.

“Without that stop sign I am gravely concerned that a child could get hit,” he said.

Metzger said hundreds of kids are at or near the ball field during games.

Mayor John Dorin said borough officials learned that temporary signs are illegal and made the decision to no longer have it put up there.

Metzger said the sign had been placed there for the past 30 years.

He asked council to perhaps consider having permanent stop signs erected at the location.

Police Chief Jeff Guyrina asked council for permission to hire another part-time police officer. He explained that some part-timers are never available for duty.

He said the additional part-timer would come at no extra cost to the borough.

Council voted to amend the police pension plan to provide for a deferred retirement option.
