Ballfield lease goes before committee
The city public works committee Tuesday reviewed a proposed annual lease agreement with the Williamsport Area Little League, which plays baseball games at three fields at Brandon Park.
The lease will be an agreement to be given final approval by City Council. It will allow the city officials to enforce the rules, such as scheduling of games and terms regarding use of signage, the application of weed killer and conditions the fields are to remain in.
While the Brandon Park Commission remains in charge of the ballfields and park facilities, the Recreation Department will be in charge of ensuring schedules and arrangements are followed as specified in the lease, according to Councilman N. Clifford “Skip” Smith, chairman of the committee.
The agreement became an issue when last year baseball teams from St. John Neumann Regional Academy and other organizations were using the fields and some of the rules in a lease patterned after one used by Old Lycoming Township never were followed, according to Jeff Reeder, of the Brandon Park Commission.
The parties wanted to have a lease that was reviewed by city Solicitor Norm Lubin and agreed to by the city and baseball league, he said.
