Commissioners to award flood mitigation demolition contract

The Lycoming County commissioners on Tuesday considered a $73,299 contract with an Altoona company for flood mitigation demolition.

Altoona Contracting Excavating Demolition Service was the lowest bidder for the contract to demolish seven properties by the end of the year to cut down on future injury or damage from future flooding.

The properties are in Cogan Station, Williamsport and Muncy.

The money for the contract comes through a federal Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant.

In other business, the Lycoming County Landfill has begun charging drop-off recycling fees for out-of-county townships and boroughs to bring in more money.

“We’ll not only get paid for the sale of the material, but also for the transportation,” said Jason Yorks, director of the county Resource Management Services.

Until now, the landfill had been picking up recycling from other counties for free, but Yorks said as costs continue to rise the county no longer is able to do it.

The commissioners considered approving four memorandums of understanding with Milton Borough in Northumberland County, at $75 per load, and Spring, Penn and Franklin townships in Snyder County, at $130 per load.

Yorks expects to bring in about $120,000 over the course of the year. He added that more counties will see fees added as the year goes on.

The commissioners will vote on those and other items when they meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.
