3 city cops start today

Locally elected and appointed officials voted on the following matters in the past week:

Federal

• The U.S. Senate voted 57-43 to pass a joint resolution providing for congressional disapproval under Chapter 8 of Title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Social Security Administration relating to implementation of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System Improvement Amendments Act of 2007. Voting yes was U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Zionsville. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, voted no.

• The U.S. House of Representatives voted 230-188 to pass a bill providing for congressional disapproval under Chapter 8 of Title 5, United States Code, of the final rule submitted by the secretary of health and human services relating to compliance with Title X requirements by project recipients in selecting subrecipients. Voting yes were U.S. Reps. Tom Marino, R-Cogan Station, and Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Howard.

State

• The state Senate did not vote this week.

• The state House of Representatives did not vote this week.

County

• The Lycoming County commissioners unanimously approved increasing the rate per bill for local tax collectors who collect county taxes, by 75 cents. Voting yes were Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare and Rick Mirabito.

Municipal

• South Williamsport Borough Council voted to create a civil ticketing procedure that would raise most fines to save residents court costs. Voting yes were Cory Lehman, Fred March, Joseph LaRue Jr., John Decker, Carl Nolan, J. Bernard Schelb, David Geise and Henry Frey Jr. Voting no was Robert Cronin. Council denied the reconsideration of reducing Ann Shaibley’s salary from $10,000 to $7,500 for her duties as the borough’s elected tax collector. Voting yes to return the salary to $10,000 were Schelb, Nolan, March and Geise. Voting no were Lehman, LaRue, Decker, Frey and Cronin.

• City Council voted 7-0 to approve the hiring of three new city police officers. Thaddaeus Paul Trafford, Addison Timothy Gingrich and Gino Vincent Caschera start working today. Voting in favor were Council President Jonathan Williamson, Clifford “Skip” Smith, Don Noviello, Liz Miele, Randall J. Allison, Joel Henderson and Bonnie Katz.
