Commissioners OK sheriff salary
The Lycoming County commissioners unanimously voted to impose the county Sherrif’s pay rate for the next four years, during a meeting Tuesday evening.
The pay rate for 2018 and 2019 will be $67,469, for 2020 the rate will be $67,806 and for 2021 the rate will be $69,162. A benefits package of roughly $25,000 will also be included with the salary.
“The county code requires all elected officials salaries to be close in rate,” Commissioner Jack McKernan said. Currently the Sheriff’s salary is slightly higher than the other row officers, such as the county controller, prothonotary and treasurer.
Also according to the county code, the pay rate for an elected official must be set before nominating petitions are able to be filed for the May primary, according to J. David Smith, county solicitor.
According to Commissioner Tony Mussare, due to a pay freeze two years ago, the other row officers did not get an increase in 2015. However, since the Sheriff is on a different term cycle, the freeze did not apply to him.
“This will bring him in line with the other row officers,” McKernan said.
In other business, the commissioners also discussed issues ranging from budget deficit woes to the county’s response to President Donald Trump’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
McKernan said since little is known about what the repeal will look like, or what would be put in it’s place, the county is not able to say how it would respond.
