‘Shattered’: Sunday boasts new high temp

Sunday boasts new high temp

Sunday saw a record high temperature of 69 degrees, shattering the previous record of 60 for that day set in 1997, said meteorologist Craig Evanego, of the National Weather Service in State College.

However, Saturday’s high of 61 didn’t quite make the cut, with the current record being 66 degrees in 2011.

The weekend’s warm weather was thanks to a “persistent upper-level ridge of high pressure across the eastern U.S.,” Evanego said. These ridges of high pressure produce “nice, warm weather.”

Average temperatures for the Williamsport area in February stick within the mid- to high 30s range, Evanego said, so the past few days have been unusually warm.

“And it looks like it’s going to stay mild,” Evanego said of this week.

Today should be sunny with temperatures in the low 50s, while Tuesday will cool down to the 40s with rain showers later in the day.

“It’s cooler, but still well above average,” Evanego said.

Although a weak cold front moved in Sunday, causing slightly cooler temperatures, a strong south-southwesterly flow will continue to bring warmth throughout the week, Evanego said.

Wednesday will heat back up into the low 60s with mostly sunny skies. Clouds will continue to gather Thursday, though temperatures are expected to remain in the low 60s. Friday will be cooler and cloudy with temperatures in the mid-50s and a 40-percent chance of rain.

A cold front will move in Friday night into Saturday, bringing showers and cooler weather with it for the remainder of the weekend, Evanego said.

As of Saturday, February has been about 5.3 degrees higher than normal on average, Evanego said, and the current temperatures forecast will see that average increase. But only time will tell if the warm weather will continue through these last winter weeks and into spring.

“We’ll see if it continues,” Evanego said. “It certainly has been a mild winter.”
