Borough to inspect wells

All of the levee relief wells in South Williamsport will be inspected in a new action taken at the council meeting Monday night.

Out of 28 relief wells in the borough, five were studied.

“Four out of those five are bad and need replaced,” Michael Miller, borough manager, said.

The five wells already checked could be immediately replaced, or the rest of the wells in the borough inspected before a plan is taken.

The planning commission unanimously approved the action before council did Monday.

The rest of the wells will be checked first.

The council also approved an engineering agreement with HRG Engineering for phase one of a paving project.

Phase one will be the accepting bids, advertising and reviewing those bids, Miller said.

Voting were Cory Lehman, Robert Cronin, Fred March, Carl Nolan, David Geise, Henry Frey Jr.

Joseph LaRue Jr., John Decker and J. Bernard Schelb were absent.

Like the rest of the county, the borough was bracing for the snowstorm Monday night.

Beginning at midnight, borough workers will be out, Miller said.

“When it starts to fall, police will be notified and standing by.”

Borough volunteers and road crews will work in three-man shifts for 12 hours each, Miller said.

“We will be plowing curb-to-curb through the entire storm,” Miller said. “Residents may have to move their vehicles several times, and sidewalks and driveways may get plowed in.”

South Williamsport Fire Department Chief Casey Lowmiller asked that citizens shovel out fire hydrants when they can.

“We ask for the cooperation of the citizens and that everyone be patient,” Police Chief Robert Hetner said.
