City Council approves upping line of credit

Locally elected and appointed officials voted on the following matters in the past week:

Federal

• The U.S. Senate voted 50-50 to pass a joint resolution nullifying a Department of Health and Human Services rule regarding subrecipients of family planning grants. Voting yes was U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Zionsville. U.S. Rep. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, voted no. Vice President Mike Pence cast the deciding vote.

• The U.S. House of Representatives voted 229-193 to pass a bill amending the Environmental Research, Development, and Demonstration Authorization Act of 1978 to revise the process of selecting members of the Science Advisory Board, adding guidelines for participation in board advisory activities, and terms of office. Voting yes was Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Howard. U.S. Reps. Tom Marino, R-Cogan Station, did not vote.

State

• The state Senate voted 39-8 to pass an act amending the Unemployment Compensation Law providing for unemployment compensation call centers and contributions by employers and employees, to further provide for contributions by employees and for the Service and Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

• The state House of Representatives did not vote last week.

County

• The Lycoming County commissioners did not meet last week.

Municipal

• City Council voted 7-0 to approve the administration’s request for upping a line-of-credit borrowing from $4 million to $5 million to provide temporary financing for a renovation project at Bowman Field. Voting in favor were President Jonathan Williamson, Randall J. Allison, Joel Henderson, Bonnie Katz, Liz Miele, Don Noviello and Clifford “Skip” Smith.

School District

• Jersey Shore Area School Board agreed to eliminate the district director of operations position and to add the new assistant superintendent position for the 2017-18 school year. Those duties will be absorbed into the assistant superintendent position, which will be held by Dr. Kenneth Dady as of July 1. Dady was approved as the acting assistant superintendent until director of operations Bruce Boncal retires on June 30. Dady also will be the Jersey Shore Area Middle School assistant principal. Jon Jean, the former middle school assistant principal, will be principal for Salladasburg and Avis elementary schools. Voting were Karen Stover, Merrill Sweitzer, Mary Thomas, Christopher Fravel, Kelley Wasson, David Hines, Loren Koch, Craig Allen and Denise Smith.

• Montoursville Area School Board voted 9-0 to approve a motion to offer $10,000 retirement incentives to six custodial and maintenance staff. Voting yes were Ron Snell, William Ruffing, William McCleary, Jennifer Marriott, George Hagemeyer, Karen Wright, Scott Konkle, Robert Logue and Denise Johns.
