Community Center to receive upgraded equipment, new layout

MONTGOMERY — This week, the Montgomery Area School Board unanimously approved the purchase of new weight room equipment and a new room layout for the Montgomery Area Athletic Community Center at a cost of $59,288 after a presentation from Mike Snyder, the newly appointed athletic director who starts in July.

A lesser quote also was provided but did not include upgraded cardio equipment, which is frequently used by community members, Superintendent Daphne Bowers said. Because the higher quote included new bikes and other equipment, the board thought it was worth the price.

As in other school board meetings of late, new state Department of Health regulations requiring students to be fully up-to-date on immunizations by the first day of the school year were discussed. District nurse Heather Walton said she plans to reach out to students’ families to make them aware.

Walton added that the largest number of students not currently up-to-date is the junior class, which now needs proof of an extra vaccination that wasn’t required in previous years.

Another stipulation in the new regulations requires an immunization be received after a pre-kindergarten student’s fourth birthday.

“Many of them get this vaccination before the fourth birthday, so they won’t meet the requirements,” Bowers said.

“This affects all the districts,” Bowers added. “Our fear is that our pediatricians, family practices, etc. where a lot of people depend on getting their information — do those doctors have all of the new regulations? Our nurses are reaching out.”

In other business, the board:

• Approved the transfer of $700,000 from the general fund committed fund balance to the capital reserve fund to be used to fix the soccer and baseball fields as well as the track over the summer.

• Approved a request from the Montgomery Area Independent Football League to use the practice fields at the complex from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14 through Nov. 30, pending the fields are not needed for district events, and to use the football stadium for its games from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 through Nov. 26, pending the field is not needed for a district event. Specific dates are to be provided.

• Approved a request from the junior class to hold its prom May 12 in the Montgomery Area Athletic Community Center.

• Added Ronald Swisher as a bus driver for Mowery Transportation.

The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. May 16.
