Hiawatha cruises to honor military

As part of the Memorial Day experiences, the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat weekend cruises kicks off for the summer season Monday with military specials.

Cruises operate at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to honor all of those who served in the armed forces.

“Military veterans and all Hiawatha riders will receive discounted or free admission,” said Skip Cochran, marketing director for River Valley Transit.

Beginning June 1, public cruises operate six days a week and sail up to four times daily.

Cruise tickets can be purchased online at www.rideHiawatha.com. “Getting tickets only during office hours was not convenient for customers,” said William E. Nichols Jr., Hiawatha board president.

Online sales allow customers to better plan and make cruise arrangements on their own time. Not everyone can call the office during the day and the new system allows the purchase of tickets any time of day or night. “Smartphone purchases have become the normal now,” Nichols said.

Two new cruises planned and focus on family fun and something for those over 60 years of age.

The Hiawatha may be rented for private event such as weddings, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, anniversaries, business meetings or any event. The main cabin is climate controlled and can be heated or cooled to make the cruise comfortable any time of the year.
