Montoursville’s Hoffman to wrestle at Ohio State

Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman gave a verbal commitment Saturday to wrestle at Ohio State University. He announced his decision on during its broadcast of the NHSCA National Duals in Virginia.

The junior is Montoursville’s only two-time state champion and will try to become the first three-time state champion from District 4 since Mike Shingara did it for Line Mountain in 1997.

Hoffman, a projected 197-pounder in college, finished the season ranked fifth in the country at 195 pounds. He followed up his second consecutive state championship in March with wins in the prestigious NHSCA Nationals and FloNationals. Hoffman chose Ohio State over Arizona State, North Carolina State, North Carolina and Northwestern.

He’ll begin his senior season with a 131-9 career record. His 131 wins are tied for the fourth-most wins in Montoursville history with Rennie Roadarmel. He’s 36 wins shy of tying his brother Garrett’s school career wins record of 167, and he’s 44 wins shy of tying the District 4 wins record of 175 held by Wyalusing’s Matt Fisk.

Ohio State is coached by Tom Ryan and led by two-time NCAA heavyweight champion and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder. The Buckeyes are coming off a national runner-up team performance at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in March.
