Assistant chief position now official in Jersey Shore

JERSEY SHORE — The Jersey Shore Area School Board on Monday appointed Dr. Kenneth Dady as assistant superintendent. His three-year contract begins July 1 and his salary will be $114,000.

Dady has been the acting assistant superintendent since earlier this year. He previously was principal of Salladasburg Elementary and co-principal for the sixth grade at Jersey Shore Middle School.

Craig Allen, board vice president, said the position of assistant superintendent had been vacant for several years.

Much of the work that employee would typically do was outsourced to other staff members, mainly elementary principals and the director of operations, said Superintendent Jill Wenrich.

However, Director of Operations Bruce Boncal has retired.

“(His retirement) gave us the opportunity to bring back the assistant’s position,” Wenrich said. “It’s just a shift in positions; it’s not any new money.”

In another matter, the board approved several insurance purchases at much lower rates than in previous years.

The board approved purchase of a district insurance policy package that includes general liability, property, automobile, fiber optics, boiler and machinery coverage from July 1 through June 30, 2018, at a cost of $89,714, about $10,000 less than the 2016-17 policy, which cost $99,547.

It also approved purchase of workers’ compensation insurance for the same coverage period at a cost of $65,178, nearly $10,000 less than last year’s policy, which cost $74,803.

Its school leaders’ errors and omissions insurance will cost $14,102, compared to last year’s $16,395, and the excess liability insurance will cost $9,526, compared to last year’s $11,761.

The district’s privacy and network liability insurance shows an increase of about $500 from last year’s $9,427 to this year’s approved cost of $9,993.

Allen also announced that Wenrich’s annual evaluation was completed during an executive session for personnel on Friday.

“We’re pleased to announce Dr. Wenrich has achieved a satisfactory score in each of the individual standards that she was assigned,” he said.

In other business, the board:

• Appointed board member Loren Koch as board treasurer for the 2017-18 fiscal year. Koch said she will forego the offered $500 salary.

• Approved the following personnel items: appointed Joshua Bertin as a part-time custodian at the middle school at an hourly rate of $11.25 effective today; appointed William Dorwart as a part-time custodian at the high school at an hourly rate of $11.25 effective today; appointed Patrick McCormick to director of technology effective July 1 with no change in salary or benefits; appointed Michael Schall as head middle school girls basketball coach at a stipend of $3,677; and granted tenure to middle school teachers Vickie Allen, Emily Buttorff and Krista Callahan.

• Awarded bids for the 2017-18 athletic supplies and equipment, athletic trainer supplies, custodial and maintenance supplies, copy paper, art supplies, computer supplies and other general supplies to various vendors at a total cost of $125,196.

• Approved a four-year rental agreement with Winthrop Resources Corp. for iPads at an annual cost of $141,396.
