Child shot at Park, Sixth avenues

A young boy was struck by gunfire, suffering a grazing wound to the leg during a gun battle between a black man and a white man on Park Avenue near Sixth Avenue and west of Thomas Avenue early Saturday evening.

City police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1000 block of Park Avenue, according to Capt. Jody Miller, a department spokesman. Upon arrival officers quickly determined that gunfire was exchanged between the men.

During the gunfire the juvenile was hit and he was transported to the UPMC Susquehanna hospital where he is receiving treatment for that injury, Miller said.

The white man, who was not identified, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to City Hall.

The identity and location of the black man is not known.

Agents and patrol officers are following up leads and actively working the case.

Police would ask for the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the suspect still at large.

A woman who knew the boy said he was 12 years old. Behind the tape, sitting on the steps of a residence, a woman said her parked Buick sport utility vehicle was hit by a flying bullet.

The woman said she was inside at the time and heard several pops.

Several people at the scene first thought there was fireworks, but with children at the scene sobbing and adults upset at one another it was clear violence had taken place.

One boy was overwrought with emotion and crying. He told his relatives, who were clumped together to console him, that he saw the two men pointing guns at each other and heard the gunshots.

Another man said he heard at least eight gunshots. A woman said she heard four shots, a pause and then a couple more.

Another man was upset and yelled at a state trooper at the scene, “If you don’t get him I will.”

The boy reportedly taken away and reportedly given medical treatment. It was not know his immediate condition.

Several women, one of them related to the boy or who was close to the boy, was screaming about the boy getting shot.

Another witness said she saw one of the men who allegedly shot at each other running down Park Avenue and getting into a taxi and a taxi was photographed at the scene.
