County’s trash becomes another group’s treasure

Lycoming County commissioners awarded contracts for surplus used recycling containers in the amount of $19,900 during their meeting Thursday morning.

In an effort to downsize the amount of unused equipment and generate more revenue, the county has been selling off recycling containers that were used in the 1990s but no longer have a purpose, said Jason Yorks, Resource Management Services director. Current containers are larger and enclosed, he added.

“We identify items that we’re going to surplus as salvage and list them on the Municibid website for a certain time,” Yorks explained. “When that time is up, the items go to whoever bid the highest. It’s a good way for the county to put surplus items out there for other municipalities or individuals that want them.”

Four lots of containers were awarded to Douglas Millheim for $4,300; Lardon Disposal for $4,000 and $7,900; and Jon Yankelitis for $3,700. The group of lots was the second out of four or five expected surplus bids, Yorks said.

The first set of lots generated about $9,500 of revenue and was approved at the commissioners’ June 1 meeting.

In other business, the commissioners honored Paulette Clementoni, director of Domestic Relations, who is retiring after 32 years of service to the county.

Judge Dudley N. Anderson wished Clementoni well, saying it is in part because of her work that Pennsylvania “always ranks within the top five” for domestic relations policies and implementation, and that the county always ranks within the top five in the state.

Further, the commissioners:

•Approved the purchase of iSeries hardware and implementation from Sirius in the amount of $58,414 off of state contract.

• Approved payment in the amount of $21,126 to Loyalsock Township for the recycling center paving project, which was budgeted for and is now complete.

• Approved Courtney English as a full-time replacement assistant printer for information services at $12.83 per hour effective June 26.

Commissioners Rick Mirabito and Jack McKernan were present and Commissioner Tony Mussare was absent. The next meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
