Miller joins school board

The South Williamsport Area School Board on Monday night unanimously appointed Nathan D. Miller as the new Region 1 board member. He was the only applicant for the vacancy.

The district is divided into three regions from which members are elected. Region One consists of the borough’s 1st Ward and the 1st precinct in the borough’s 2nd Ward to the east side of Curtin Street.

Miller will replace Joseph V. Pulizzi III, who resigned on June 5. Pulizzi was up for re-election at the end of the year, so Miller will fill in until the election in November.

Miller is on the ballot, cross-filed as both Democrat and Republican. Airneezer Paige has filed as Democrat. Pulizzi will no longer be running as a candidate.

Region 1 is the only election contest for the district.

Miller said he has a child going into first grade and another going into fourth grade in the district.

“I have been in education for a long time,” he said. “I grew up in South Side, just half a block away … I’m looking forward to working with you guys and seeing what we can accomplish.”

Because he was the only applicant for the position, he was the only one interviewed.

Voting yes were members Chris Branton, Cathy Bachman, Gregg Anthony, Steve Persun and Sue Davenport. Members Nicholas Fiorini, John Engel and Jerry Broskey were absent.

Miller was asked to be sworn in by a magistrate judge before the next school board meeting on July 17.
