Locals tell Marino new health care bill ‘would be devastating’

Roughly a dozen people, concerned about the Republican plan to overturn former President Barack Obama’s health care law, protested in front of the Williamsport office of U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, R-Cogan Station, Tuesday afternoon.

The demonstration was among more than some 30 “actions” expected to be held at lawmakers’s offices across the nation.

The congressman reportedly was not at his office.

However, Alison Hirsch, of the Lycoming County Progressives steering committee, said some people who attended the rally were able to talk to the lawmaker’s office staff.

“We had people go in two at a time,” she said.

A list of demands were presented to Marino.

Hirsch said many people simply cannot afford to lose the health care they now have under the Affordable Care Act.

Earlier this week, the GOP effort to replace Obamacare hit a snag when two U.S. senators announced they will not support new health care legislation.

But Hirsch said now is not the time for those who support the existing federal health care plan to be complacent.

“I’m concerned about rising costs for seniors,” said Carol Troisi, of Unityville.

Troisi, a reading specialist in the Millville School District, said she knows of a number of families with special needs kids who would be hurt by cuts to Medicaid that she and others believe the Republican plan would bring.

“These families are stretched to the limit,” she said. “For them to lose Medicaid would be devastating.”

She added that Obamacare has been a “great safety net” for needy families.

Barbara Most, of Trout Run, said the proposed plan could ultimately jeopardize Medicare as well.

Sprite McLaughlin, of Loyalsock Township, was asked if Marino hears the voices of concerned residents such as her own.

“I think he hears it but he’s dismissive,” she said.

Rev. Darlene Little, Lycoming Township, said it’s important to continue shining a light on the issue and the actions of the federal lawmakers.

“Everyone should get the health care his (Marino’s) family gets,” she said.

Marino was not available for comment as of press time.
