July seventh wettest on record, August starts warm and muggy

While July 2017 won’t go down anywhere close to the warmest on record, it does rank among the top 10 wettest on record.

“It’s the seventh wettest July on record,” said Matt Steinbugl, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College.

The service has been tracking the weather data since 1895, he said.

Total precipitation here through Sunday was 7.45 inches of rain, he said.

The wettest July on record was in 1992, with 9.65 inches of rain.

The 7.4 inches of rain for the month is a deviation of 3.25 inches above normal.

The heaviest rain days were July 17 and 23. Rainfall on July 17 was a daily maximum for the date, Steinbugl said.

For the year, there have been 30.2 inches of precipitation, or 7.24 inches above normal.

It was not a particularly hot month compared to the hottest on record. Through Monday, the average temperature was 74.9 degrees, about 2.1 degrees above normal, with the warmest days of the month falling on July 19 and July 20, when the temperature reached 93 degrees.

However, the highest temperature ever recorded in July was 106 degrees in 1936, Steinbugl said. He didn’t provide a specific day.

With the arrival today of August, the service forecasts indicates a warm day today, with a high temperature of 90 degrees, and a strong potential for an afternoon thunderstorm. The rest of the week is also about as warm, with highs each day about 89 degrees, and thunderstorms likely to pop up in spots, according to the forecast.

It will be warm for the ceremonial grand opening at 5 p.m. Friday of the 30th Loyalsock Valley Antique Farm Machinery Show at the Consolidated Sportsmen’s Groups on Route 87 six miles north of Montoursville. The high temperature is forecast to reach 89 and that will bring the chance for spotty thunderstorms, according to the service.
