Sun expected for parade, 1st games could see rain

IOANNIS PASHAKIS/ Sun-Gazette Father Daryl Lewis and Daughter Lisa of Datman Productions assemble the walls of a Little League World Series float for the Grand Slam Parade.

Attendees of tonight’s Grand Slam Parade can expect a “typical mid-August day,” according to the National Weather Service, but a cold front sweeping in by Friday means that the first two days of the Series may not be so lucky.

The Grand Slam Parade, which kicks off the Little League World Series at 5:30 p.m. seems to have the go-ahead from Mother Nature, according to meteorologist Craig Evanego of the weather service.

“It looks like it should be a fairly nice summer day; it doesn’t look real humid,” Evanego said. “It will be right around 80 degrees by the evening.”

Lasting until 8 p.m., the parade will start at the intersection of West Fourth and Susquehanna streets and end at the intersection of West Fourth and Market streets. During the parade, attendees will be able to see the 16 teams participating in the Series and 12 bands, nine from surrounding high schools and three Mummers bands from Philadelphia.

Thursday will have a 30-percent chance of showers or thunderstorms and Friday will have an even higher chance for thunderstorms, at 50 percent, according to Evanego.

“By Thursday it turns a little more unsettled,” Evanego said. “We are going to have a cold front come in on Friday bringing in that chance of thunderstorms.”

While the chance of rain during the first two days of the series isn’t desired, Evanego forecasts that the weekend will be better for Series attendees.

“Saturday looks like morning clouds giving way to a summer afternoon,” Evanego said.

Sunday also has a better outlook. It looks like the Cardinals and Pirates Little League Classic at Bowman Field will be playing in 70-degree weather on a mostly sunny day.
